Corfe Class

Welcome to

Corfe Class!

Our Teachers are Mrs Johnston & Mrs Kearns

(Mrs Johnston teaches on a Monday and Tuesday and Mrs Kearns teaches on a Wednesday, Thursday and Friday)

Our Teaching Assistants are

(Mrs Bennetts helps us Monday to Friday and Mrs Feghali-Brown helps us Monday to Thursday mornings)

Our Curriculum.

As a mixed Foundation Stage and Year One class, we will always ensure both year groups of children access the curriculum they require. Our mornings will focus on Maths and English, as well as Handwriting, Guided Reading and Phonics sessions. In the afternoons, our Foundation Stage children will be involved in child-initiated learning, while our Year Ones will focus on subjects, such as History, Geography and Science.

This term we will initially be settling in to our new class and finding out about our castle- Corfe. Then our year one children will begin focusing on History and finding out all about the life and times of Queen Elizabeth 1. Reception children will be learning about themselves and their families. Please see the Autumn term topic webs below to find out about our learning across all the Curriculum subjects/areas of learning.

Photos and videos of your child's learning will be posted here. Important information is sent via seesaw and it's a great way for you to communicate your child's teachers. Please let us know if you're are experiencing any problems and we'll be happy to help you get connected!

We will read with your child on a weekly basis during guided reading sessions. We would ask you to read with your child as often as possible at home too- it really does make a huge difference to their progress. If they are not in the mood to read to you or they are tired, it is fine to read to them or to take it in turns to read a page each- it should be an enjoyable experience, not a chore! They will bring books home from school, but they may sometimes rather read things they choose at home or at the library and this is fine too! Talking about what they have read or asking questions about a story you have read to them is also invaluable and we are really grateful for your support in this area.

To encourage greater independence within year one and to ensure children are choosing books that appeal to them, we'll be involving them in their book changes, alongside a TA. Once a book has been read at home, the children are to place their reading book/s in the tray within the classroom. They will be given time during the day to make a new selection. We would usually have a reading record book in which parents are asked to make a comment about their child's reading but, due to the current situation, we are unable to use these at present.

For our Foundation Stage children books will be changed if required on a Monday and Friday by Mrs Bennetts.

House Teams

Every child has a house team. They will remain in the same house team throughout their time in our school.  Our four house teams are Dragons (Green), Griffins (Yellow), Pegasus (Blue) and Phoenix (Red). House teams are a whole school system for promoting good behaviour as children can receive house points from any adult in school and add it to their class tally. Tallies are collected each week and added to a running total until, at the end of a term, a winner is announced! The winning house will usually get to wear their own clothes one day during the following term. On Sport's Day and other house team challenge days, children can wear their house colours to represent their team.

For the time being we will not be having our usual fruit and veg deliveries, so the children can bring their own healthy snack for their morning break. Please ensure it does not contain nuts.

Children will also need to bring their water bottle.

Friday Explorers

Foundation Stage children would usually have Friday Explorer sessions on a Friday and we welcome as many parent helpers to join us as possible. However, unfortunately due to the current pandemic, Friday Explorers will be on pause for the foreseeable future. We will let you know if and when this situation changes.
