Light of the Week
In Tiger Moth Class, we choose a Light of the Week every Friday.
The child will be chosen for being a true example of 'Being a Light for All to See'.
A 'Shining Light' could be a child who has really stood out during the week for their behaviour or their learning in a particular subject; a 'Guiding Light' could be a child who has helped the class as a whole or supported someone in need; a 'Leading Light' could be someone who has set a brilliant example in their learning or their conduct; and a 'Welcoming Light' could be someone who has made a new child or visitor feel welcome and safe in our school.

We share all our wonderful learning on Seesaw and use it as a communication tool.

Reading
All children are heard read every week, either individually or as part of a reading group where we share and discuss different texts. The children will have opportunities to change their books or be provided with a new book every week as part of their shared reading session, which they then take home.
We would love it if you would read with your child as often as possible and take the time to discuss what they have read. It really does make a huge difference to their progress and is a proven fact that children's vocabulary, confidence and self-esteem are improved by reading every day. It should be a pleasurable experience with a mutual enjoyment of storylines and characters. Question them about their understanding and make predictions about the next chapters.

In addition to reading level books, we have a huge selection of recommended books for each year group to read, and your child will be able to choose the books that interest them. There is a real mixture of picture books and short chapter books for all year groups. On top of these recommended books, we also have a great variety of books that are year group linked.

Phonics and Spellings
Your child will be in a phonics/spelling group and will receive daily lessons to develop their phonological awareness, application and spelling pattern comprehension.
Daily phonics sessions follow the ‘Unlocking Letters and Sounds’ programme. Children learn through synthetic phonics, the teaching of writing in which particular graphemes (letters) and their associated phonemes (sounds) are decoded through segmentation to spell words.
In Year 2, phonics continues to be revisited to ensure mastery of the phonetic code and any child who does not meet age-related expectations will continue to receive support to close identified gaps. Once secure, the children move onto 'Spelling Shed'. The ‘Spelling Shed’ programme supports the teaching of spelling, embracing knowledge of spelling conventions, etymology, morphology, phonics and definitions of words. The programme is split into weekly spelling patterns, which are organised by year group; it also includes sessions on the common exception words and challenging spellings. The ‘Spelling Shed’ scheme progresses through the spelling patterns set out in the National Curriculum.
Year 3 commences with a recap of Year 2 common exception words before moving directly onto Year 3 spelling rules and patterns following the Spellin gShed programme.
Depending on their group, pupils will be set weekly spellings, following either the Year 2 or Year 3 programme. These words may follow a particular phonic or spelling pattern or be taken from the year group 'common exception words' list.
Children can practise these words using a variety of methods, including using the Spelling Shed website. Your child has their own login which will provide them with access to the games relating to their weekly spelling list.
Please feel free to support your child in learning these words at any point.

PE
We will be doing PE on Thursdays and Fridays. Please make sure you wear the appropriate school PE kit, including properly fitted trainers. Long hair must be tied up.

Doodlemaths
Doodlemaths is a bespoke online maths programme which supports essential Core Maths Skills in both Year 2 and Year 3 and supplements maths teaching in class. It builds children's confidence and self-esteem.
Your child has a Doodlemaths account and we would encourage your child to regularly use it to answer the bespoke maths questions which are tailored to their needs.
Times Tables
During the course of the year, Year 3 children will be encouraged to use the TT Rock Stars App which supports practise and speed of times table skills. Please encourage your child to go on their TTrockstars login -they will show amazing improvement in their speed of recall which will obviously help in many areas of maths.
Daily Mile
We are strong believers in the importance of daily exercise and the Daily Mile is a perfect opportunity to do this.
The Daily Mile gets children out of the classroom for fifteen minutes every day to run or jog, at their own pace, with their classmates, making them fitter, healthier, and more able to concentrate in the classroom. For more information, see this website: https://thedailymile.co.uk/
