Taj Mahal Class

Welcome to

Taj Mahal Class!

Our Teachers are Mrs Johnston & Mrs Kearns

Our Teaching Assistants are Mrs Bennetts & Mrs Feghali-Brown

Our Curriculum.

As a mixed Foundation Stage and Year one class we will always ensure both year groups of children access the curriculum they require. Our mornings will focus on Maths and English, as well as Handwriting, Guided Reading and Phonics sessions. In the afternoons our Foundation Stage children will join their peers in Aurora Class for child-initiated learning, while our year ones will focus on subjects, such as, Music, History, Geography and Science.

This term we are all trying a slightly different approach to the curriculum. Rather than teaching every subject across the whole term, we will be blocking learning so that the children (Year 1 -6) can get fully immersed in the subject and will hopefully retain new knowledge in greater depth. This term week 1 will involve thinking and learning about the Taj Mahal. Children will also be drawing comparisons between India and our capital city of London, Week 2 will have an RE focus on the Creation story, Weeks 3-5 will be a History focus, all about the Magna Carta, and so on. We will provide regular updates as we go along.

Reading

We will read with your child on a weekly basis during guided reading sessions. We would ask you to read with your child as often as possible at home too- it really does make a huge difference to their progress. If they are not in the mood to read to you, it is fine to read to them or to take it in turns to read a page each- it should be an enjoyable experience, not a chore! They will bring books home from school, but they may sometimes rather read things they choose at home or at the library and you are welcome to record this in their reading record books. Talking about what they have read or asking questions about a story you have read to them is also invaluable and we are really grateful for your support in this area.

To encourage greater independence within year one and to ensure children are choosing books that appeal to them, we'll be asking them to change their own reading books. Once a book has been read at home and a comment made, the children are to place both their reading book and reading record book in the tray within the classroom. They will be given time during the day to make a new selection.

For our Foundation Stage children books will be changed if required on a Monday and Friday by Mrs Bennetts.
