Design and Technology

In Design and Technology children are encouraged to generate initial ideas, thoughts and opportunities to solve a challenge or need. They experiment with these ideas through talk, sketches, models and exploration, using a wide variety of materials and components to create their final product.

The children are taught to reflect on their designs as they develop, bearing in mind the way the product will be used. They are encouraged to identify what is working well and what could be improved, working on their own or as part of a team thinking about what products will be used for and the needs of the people who use them.

Experiences will often be linked to our topic and learning theme and involve modelling with recyclable materials, textiles, food, wood and a whole host of other materials. Many of our beautiful areas around the school such as our Welcome Room, our Reflective Garden and our beach have been planned, designed, developed and created by our children, thereby developing many valuable life-skills in a fun and creative way.

We are lucky enough to have the facilities to grow a range of vegetables and other food in our school allotments, this gives our children a wonderful opportunity to experience the cycle of planting, growing, cooking and eating. We even have access to eggs from our school chickens!
