  • Science Wow Event.

    Tue 18 Oct 2022

Today, Noah, Poppy, Austin, Oliver and Liam all got the chance to be super scientists!! As part of the Corsham Cluster STEM initiative, our five intrepid explorers got to travel to The Corsham School and get immersed in science.

They got to code a Lego mindstorm robot, find the DNA of a strawberry and discover the germs that lurk when you don’t wash your hands!

Fun was had by all and more children are inspired to take up a career in science.

  • Science week

    Fri 14 Oct 2022

Paper spinners, fizzing rockets, nature walks, seeds and fruit, newspaper towers can only mean one thing...     Science Week at Colerne Church of England School!

There was such a buzz around school as the children, staff, visitors and volunteers immersed themselves in all things science. The week started with a whole school event – The Great Paper Tower Challenge. Using 4 pieces of newspaper and only one metre of sellotape, the children worked in teams to build the tallest and strongest tower. The winners built a magnificent structure measuring 207cm high; it was also strong enough to support a ping pong ball without collapsing! It’s not easy to do. You should try it!

One of the week’s highlights was the whole school visiting the Azimghur Barracks and taking part in a carousel of activities. We would like to thank Major Calum Davidson and the base for the hours of work that went into organising the event – the children absolutely loved it! Another highlight was finding out about Colerne’s beauty as Dorothy Robertson and Mike Rogers from Wild Colerne shared their wildlife expertise as they accompanied our Year 6 children on a walk to Frank’s Wood – we learnt so much! We would also like to thank Nurse Di from Colerne surgery; Mr Middleton for talking to us about his job as a software engineer; Mrs Feghali – Brown for talking to all of KS1 about whales; Mr Hayllar who shared his engineering knowledge with Year 4/5; Mr Rich for sharing hydraulic vehicles with Yrs1/2 (they thought this was very cool!) and Lisa Tucker who organised two chemists to us about their jobs creating cosmetics. There were lots of wow moments as they shared fun experiments.

We discovered by the end of the week that so many different people use science in their jobs and that they don’t all look like Albert Einstein! In fact, the children designed outfits for scientists – there were some wonderful creations.

Science week couldn’t have happened without the support of parents and volunteers who made the event so successful. Thank you to everyone who gave up their time and shared their love of Science. The wonder of science certainly ascended to new heights in our school!
